In December 1780, British Brigadier General Benedict Arnold captured an American captain near the Chesapeake Bay, and asked this man what the Americans would do to him if captured. The captain replied, "If my countrymen should catch you, I believe they would cut off that lame leg, which was wounded in the cause of freedom and virtue, and bury it with the hon[ou]rs of war, and afterwards hang the rest of your body."
